Chapter Ten

Keifer woke up with a movie still going in the background, over and over. He groaned, got up and turned it off, then went to the kitchen to start a pot of coffee and eat a Pop Tart.

He heard Hunter get up and go to the bathroom, so he grabbed another pastry and two mugs. Lord, what a life. Hunter was something else. Keif wasn’t sure whether to be shocked or pleased or just utterly confused.

Naked as a jaybird, Hunt came into the kitchen, giving him a grin. “You and those Pop Tarts.”

“Love them. Food of the gods.”

“You’d do well with a breakfast burrito,” Hunter suggested.

“I like those. I get them at Floras.”

“They’re easy as pie to make.” Hunter began to pull stuff out of the fridge that he hadn’t even been aware they had. Tortillas, eggs, bacon, tomatoes, onions.

Keifer sucked his cup of coffee, head tilted. “I have never bought an onion or a tomato in my life.”

“I went shopping yesterday while you were sleeping.” Hunter put the stove on and slid a cast iron pan on top of the burner.

“Huh.” Weird. Neat, though.

Chuckling, Hunter made short work of chopping up the onion and tossing it into the pan along with the bacon. Then he started chopping up the tomato and cracking eggs into a bowl, mixing them up.

Okay, that was gross. Neat, but gross.

“What?” Hunter raised an eyebrow at him. “Don’t tell me you’ve never cooked eggs before.”

“I didn’t say anything.” He didn’t cook.

“Not with your mouth, no. But your face is saying volumes.” Hunter chuckled and poured off a bunch of bacon grease, then added the eggs to the bacon and onions.

“I’ve never cooked. I went to high school, then the service, then here.”

“Did you live at home for high school?” Hunter put the tortillas in the microwave for twenty seconds.

“Yeah. You?”

“Until I was sixteen. Then I made the mistake of telling my folks who I loved.”

“Ah. Yeah. I never did. I just never went back home.”

“You knew they wouldn’t approve?” Hunter assembled all the bits and pieces and put two breakfast burritos on a plate and handed it over.

“Thanks, man. It smells amazing.” They settled together at the little table. “I knew they didn’t approve of me, period.”

“Oh, I’m sorry.”

“Why? You didn’t do it. I’m not normal. That was important to them.”

“Well, it still sucks. Parents are supposed to love you no matter what. Figures that most of the guys I know that doesn’t hold true for.”

Keifer devoured the burritos, making uninhibited nummy noises.

“You like to eat well enough -- I can teach you to cook. You saw how easy it was.”

“Me? Why?” It was an honest question. He didn’t really see the point.

“Because it’s better for you than pizza and Pop-Tarts.”

“I’m not going to live to a ripe old age, Hunter. What does it matter?”

“Bull fucking shit you aren’t.” The ferocity in Hunter’s voice surprised him.

“Stats say I’ll either get killed on duty, commit suicide, or have a heart attack by forty.” He knew it.
